Competition Depth Index
Every depth multiplier in the cross-sport model comes from six published sub-factors, each scored 0–100 with football as the reference point. The weighted mean, divided by 100, is the multiplier. Nothing is set by opinion after the fact — change a sub-factor and the multiplier changes with it.
Depth = Σ(sub-factor × weight) / 100 · applied as (0.65 + 0.35 × depth1.25)
Sub-factors and weights
- Global participation 25%
- Size of the amateur base worldwide, from federation participation surveys. Football's ~250m registered and casual players is the 100 reference.
- Professional competitors 20%
- How many people earn a living competing at the top of the sport, across all national leagues and circuits.
- Geographic reach 20%
- How many countries field genuinely competitive athletes, not just how many federations are members.
- Professional ecosystem 15%
- Depth of the professional machinery: academies, coaching, medicine, scouting, prize money and year-round calendars.
- Historical competitive density 10%
- How hard the sport's own history has been to win: number of credible contenders per era across the tracked period.
- Open talent pathway 10%
- How open the route from beginner to elite is. Sports needing costly facilities, equipment or one national league score lower.
