Methodology
The GOAT Score is a weighted, normalised composite. It is deliberately simple and fully published so you can disagree with it precisely.
Category weighting
GOAT = 0.25·Dominance + 0.20·Peak + 0.20·Longevity + 0.20·Honours + 0.15·Statistics
1 · Collect raw records
Titles, wins, rate stats and career length are collected per athlete from official governing-body records and established statistics archives.
2 · Normalise within the sport
Each raw metric is scaled 0–100 against the strongest recorded value in that sport, so a Grand Slam count is never compared directly with a goal tally.
3 · Adjust for era and context
Field strength, number of available events per season and equipment or machinery advantage are applied as context multipliers before scoring.
4 · Roll up into five categories
Normalised metrics are grouped into Dominance, Peak, Longevity, Honours and Statistics — each itself expressed on a 0–100 scale.
5 · Apply the weighting
The five category scores are combined with fixed weights into a single GOAT Score. The same weights apply to every sport, which is what makes cross-sport ranking possible.

The participation multiplier
Reaching No. 1 is not equally hard everywhere. Football is played by hundreds of millions of people in almost every country, so the funnel to the very top is brutally narrow. A specialised discipline may have a few thousand serious competitors worldwide, which mathematically raises anyone's chance of standing on top of it. To keep cross-sport rankings honest, each sport carries a global participation and competition depth factor between 0.70 and 1.00.
Cross-sport GOAT = In-sport GOAT Score × Competition Depth
Inside a sport hub the pure in-sport score on the 0–100 scale is always used — Mondo Duplantis is measured against pole vaulters, never against footballers. The multiplier only applies on the global leaderboard, the all-time list and in cross-sport head-to-head comparisons, and both numbers are shown side by side so the weighting is visible.

Cultural & brand impact
Some careers changed more than a record book. The Cultural & Brand Impact index (1–100) rates how far a name travelled beyond its own sport: mainstream recognition, commercial and merchandising footprint, and lasting influence on culture and the business of sport. Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi sit at the very top; quieter dominators such as Mondo Duplantis or Don Bradman score lower without losing a single point of sporting credit.
Total legacy = Cross-sport GOAT × 82% + Cultural & Brand Impact × 18%
The default ranking model everywhere is Pure Sporting Data: titles, statistics, dominance, longevity and global competition depth only. Switching a leaderboard or a head-to-head to Total Legacy & Brand blends the cultural index in at 18%. The index is editorial, not a sporting measurement, which is exactly why it lives behind its own toggle.
Data transparency
Every athlete profile lists the sources behind its figures — governing bodies such as FIFA, ATP, WTA, the PGA Tour, the FIA and Riot Games, plus recognised archives like HLTV, Liquipedia, Tennis Abstract and RSSSF. Records are point-in-time snapshots and active careers keep moving.
